Mao demanded that all public and private resources of the nation were to be used for transforming and modernizing the nation. His decision extracted a terrible price from his people and the nation.

Stripped of any way to provide food for themselves, the Chinese people starved. Jung Chang and Jon Halliday reveal in their book “Mao: The Unknown Story” that in some areas villagers resorted to cannibalism to survive. Those in towns and the cities were forced to build homemade steel furnaces and turn all their metal goods – pots, pans, and anything else – into smelt to be used for industrial purposes, thus transforming each private residence into a micro-steel mill. Additionally, to preserve the harvest Mao had all sparrows killed because they ate grain. The result was an ecological disaster that resulted in the birds' natural prey devouring the harvest.
